Mr. Frank McCathran

Frank McCathran built his career on developing and implementing critical lightning and severe weather alerting solutions.  While at WeatherBug, Frank oversaw the business strategies for the company’s weather monitoring and lightning alerting solutions used by thousands of schools, public venues, golf courses, recreation facilities, and professional sports organizations.  Frank continues to be involved in many initiatives focused on education and promoting lightning safety awareness and severe weather alerting for outdoor venues and school athletic programs.  He developed relationships with both Little League Baseball and Babe Ruth League Baseball to implement updated guidelines for lightning safety and the introduction of technology to make it easier for coaches to make life safety related decisions when it comes to lightning and severe weather.

He was selected as a member of the American Meteorological Society’s BOPE Committee, a group that helps develop recommendations for meteorological education initiatives.  Frank has been a contributing member of NOAA’s Lightning Safety Awareness Team (lightningsafety.noaa.gov) – a group of like-mined partners from both public and private organizations with the mission of providing lightning safety, preparedness and awareness information to the public.  He also works closely as a member of many advisory boards with shared missions of educating individuals and organizations about lightning safety.

Holding a professional teaching certificate, he taught public school in the State of Maryland.  Frank is a magna cum laude graduate of Maryland’s Frostburg State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Justice Studies. He also earned his Master of Education degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at Frostburg.  Frank’s main hobby is spending quality time with his wife, son and daughter.  He is a certified USA Football Coach and Cal Ripken Baseball Coach and enjoys his time on the gridiron and the baseball diamond with youth athletes – helping them develop their leadership and teamworks skills in a safe environment.
